Cakes with flowers

I am often inspired by bridal bouquets when I think about flowers to put in the shop.  It is a typical practice for brides to ask for flowers that mimic flowers in their bouquet so why not go that route?
Some blues blend into greens with these hydrangeas.
Freesia is a gorgeous summer flower.  It is also a great, sophisticated filler flower.

Lily, lily, lily...

Had a few orders for Oriental Lilies and I've finished a few here.  They are very easy to make but there are a lot of details to consider.  I've had to take green dust and rub it on a length of white tape so I can wrap it around a wire for the "pistil".  Then I mixed pumpkin orange royal icing and hand dipped each of 6 wires to make the stamens.  After that, I cut out petals, run them on wire, and leave them out to dry.  Once all the prepping is finished, the magic happens.  With just a bit of florist tape, the whole flower unfurls.  It takes my breath away every time.

Then the heartache sets in when I think about how I should ship these.

A New Postcard in the Works!

Ooh I can't wait for my new postcards to arrive from the printers.  This time, I tried to coordinate the colors of the flowers enough to make it aesthetically pleasing.  The first photo you see is the one coming in a few days.  The others are my past designs.  What a departure, huh?
And mind you, it's only been a few months since I've picked up the business again (that was January).  Well it means that I've grown a lot as a cake decorator, designer, a person, and businesswoman.  My taste is evolving and I feel like I'm slowly being more professional because it's showing in my work.

Hydrangea Madness!

Saw some sweet looking hydrangeas at Trader Joe's today and thought about posting a few pics of my most popular flower in the shop.  These are results of past photoshoots where they didn't quite make the cut into the shop photos.
You can tell which ones are the "earlier" photos of my photographing career.  I didn't know that much about lighting and photoshop; and back then, somehow I thought "I know what I was doing".  HA!

Photoshoot with Steve

I'm not too much of a photographer.  I don't understand things like aperture, f-stop, or shutter speed so I can't maximize the abilities of my simple Nikon much less any kind of DSLR.  Luckily my friend Steve, who is a photographer helped me out yesterday by showcasing his snazzy DSLR complete with (VR) vibration reduction and tripod!  We tried to figure out the best light and the best settings for making my flowers look much more expensive than they are.

We photographed a few of the orders I have this week.  Check them out!

Inspired Cakes

I love My Sweet and Saucy.  Catchy name!  They're over in Long Beach and I haven't been able to visit them yet, but I admire their work from afar.  Needed some sort of inspiration for the flowers I should make for the shop and I absolutely LOVE that they make big statement blooms to flank nicely sized wedding cakes on dessert tables.

New Packaging

Here's how my flowers will be shipped from now on.  Larger batches of flowers will come in a pretty white box instead of the kraft box.

{{FEATURED!!}} Handpicked For Front Page of Etsy

Did I ever tell you I was picked to go on the front page of Etsy?  It was such a rush to see it there, I wish I could be there again.  It just verified all of my hard work.  Thank you so much to Etsy treasury curator daniellelondon for liking my work enough to include me in this treasury.

Versions Of My Inspirations

So here are the flowers I came up with according to my inspiration photos

Floral Inspirations

I try to gather as many flower photos as I can to be inspired enough to replicate them.  Here's a small collective of what I love.  I don't know where all the sources are for these but if you do, let me know and I will certainly give credit where credit is due.  Just beautiful!
